For those of you who thought there was no way to get lots of users onto data-enabled cell phones and handhelds, think again.
Last week, using a system developed by Beijing's Newpalm (China) Information Technology, the Welfare Lottery Bureau of Heilongjiang began selling prepaid cards for use by mobile subscribers in this northeastern province. Cards run from $6 to $24 and allow users with a passcode to buy virtual lottery tickets by sending SMS (short message services) messages.
The central server then sends a reply SMS containing a string of numbers, which may be valid for prizes up to $604,000. That's it. Operators, which currently include China Mobile Communications Corp. and China Unicom Group, charge a small fee for each lottery SMS sent.
