How much member states gain from joining Mega Millions varies among the
states and sometimes varies from state officials' predictions.
"Washington joined in 2002 and did not gain as much revenue in its first year as the state forecasted," said Gary Preuss, a revenue estimator with the State Comptroller's office. "The reason for the difference is primarily that Washington's original annual ticket sales prediction of $117 million was too high, particularly when you consider the state's population is about six million," Preuss said. The estimate for Texas, which has about 22 million residents, or nearly four times the number of people in Washington, is about $101 million in revenue from January 2004 through August 2005, a figure that Preuss believes is quite conservative. That revenue estimate is based on predicted sales of more than $300 million in Texas. It's essential to conservatively estimate the amount of revenue you expect and avoid relying too heavily on big jackpots," said Ed Scarborough, the Virginia Lottery's public affairs director. "That's why states offer more than just Mega Millions. In Virginia, we offer a variety of lottery products and don't solely rely on Mega Millions," he said. |
