Mindful that some individuals have compulsive gambling problems, the Texas
Lottery Commission launched a September 2003 campaign that cautions, "Play
Responsibly. Remember, it's just a game." The campaign's Web site provides
information on resources for those dealing with a gambling addiction,
including links to groups such as the National Center for Responsible
Gambling, Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon.org.
"If it is going to benefit the state of Texas and its residents economically, I am not opposed to joining Mega Millions," said Sharon Lichtenstein, executive director of the nonprofit Texas Council on Problem and Compulsive Gambling. "People who work with gamblers don't take a stand on whether gambling is good or bad public policy because our focus is finding help for the gambler," Lichtenstein said. "However, I would hope that those involved in the negotiations would provide some help for those who are in danger of becoming addicted to gambling. We need to do this responsibly, because we know that some people will become addicted and what better time to provide assistance than at the very start." They already play Texas Mega Millions Lottery Tickets, Megamillions, Megamillion, Mega Million, Powerball Lottery Tickets, Powerball Tickets and Powerball Online, Texas Two Step, Pick 3 and Cash Five. Players also can purchase instant scratch-off tickets, which generate about 60 percent of all lottery sales in Texas. |
