Since the Texas Lottery began in 1992, Texas has gained about $10.8 billion in revenue. In 1997, the Texas Legislature began to dedicate lottery revenue to the state's Foundation School Fund, which has reaped $5.6 billion so far. Texas lottery players have won $18.3 billion in prizes since 1992.
In fiscal 2003, the state's lottery sales increased by 5.5 percent to top $3.1 billion. Revenue from Mega Millions tickets sold in Texas also will go to the Foundation School Fund to support the state's public schools.
"If it is going to benefit the state of Texas and its residents economically, I am not opposed to joining Mega Millions," said Sharon Lichtenstein, executive director of the nonprofit Texas Council on Problem and Compulsive Gambling.
