Mega Millions is the successor lottery to the Big Game, which began in 1996
with six states. The Big Game awarded the highest jackpot--$363 million--in
North America's history in May 2000. In 2002, the Big Game became Mega
Millions and New York, Ohio and Washington joined.
Between August 2002 and August 2003, Mega Millions' average jackpot was about $42.3 million, but in June 2003, a lucky winner hit the advertised jackpot for $180 million, and in September 2003, another ticket holder celebrated a jackpot worth about $150 million. The actual jackpots paid to winners are sometimes higher than the amount advertised because of last-minute ticket sales. For example, the June 2003 jackpot, advertised at $180 million, actually paid out $183 million. The odds of winning any prize in Mega Millions are 1 in 43, and the odds of hitting the jackpot are one in about 135 million. Texas is the eleventh state to join Mega Millions. Its 10 partner states will be Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Washington. These states had a total population of about 94 million in 2000, and their combined base jackpots begin at $10 million and could rise to more than $500 million. Other prizes range from $2 to $175,000. In Mega Millions, players pick six numbers from two separate pools o |
